Fusion Directions

Fusion Self-Etch Primer is an all-purpose self-etching-primer ideal for promoting adhesion between multiple surface coatings (including applications of topcoats or primers over cured RustSeal) in addition to priming bare metals such as steel, brass, aluminum, and most hard plastics.

PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES SHOULD BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN USING THIS PRODUCT.

DIRECTIONS:

Recommended temp application range is 55-82ºF (13-28ºC).

Clean & dry all surfaces to be etched or primed. KBS Klean, a water-based cleaner/degreaser, is recommended if cleaning is required.

For bare metal surfaces, clean with KBS Klean before applying a single covering coat.

Fusion may be applied by brush, roller or sprayer.

Always apply thin, covering coats.

A single coat is generally all that is required but you apply additional coats as needed.

Thinning is not generally required, however, KBS #1 Thinner may be used if needed.

For brush, roller or sprayer applications, stir can very well before and during use.

For aerosol application, shake can until mixing ball moves freely for a minimum of one minute. Hold nozzle 10-14 inches (25-32cm) from surface to be coated.

A single light coat is generally all that is required but you can apply additional coats as needed. When needed, apply 2 to 3 light to medium coats allowing a 3 to 5 minute dry time between each coat. Apply using steady and even strokes. Product will be dry-to-the-touch in 15 minutes. Allow one hour dry time before sanding, priming or top-coating. No need to sand if coated over within 24 hours.

IMPORTANT: Clean spray head immediately after use by turning can upside down and spraying until no more paint appears. If clogging occurs, remove spray head and clean with a fine wire. Replace carefully, pointing can and spray head away from you.

Allow 1 hour for Fusion to dry before applying BlackTop, KBS MAXX , KBS Top Coater, KBS Top Coater Aerosol or another topcoat or primer.

Always coat over Fusion within 7 days. If you want to apply after 7 days, scuff the Fusion with 300 grit.

Questions and Answers

Q: I have a truck frame that still has a lot of factory paint still on it that I know won't last very long. Do I need to strip all the paint off first or and can I go over it with the self etching primer and then coat it with rust seal?

Asked by: Travis - 3/8/2014
A: It would be best to strip off the old coating, but it is not necessary. The best rust protection is always achieved by applying RustSeal to properly prepped metal. But, if you have do not want to strip off the old coating, you can clean the old coating with KBS Klean and scuff it up with 300 grit and then apply RustSeal.

I built a welding table this year and top coated it with there product but they recommend putting this primer on first for best adhesion. I followed the direction to the t and found they were right it is a very tough strong primer well worth the price. I top coated it and have hammered on it welded on it and still no issues. thanks for the advice guys.

Getting paint to stick to brass & copper was impossible until I started using KBS Fusion - Self-Etching Primer. My live steam locomotives have lots of tubing & fittings, & until I started using Fusion, the paint simply rubbed off, now thanks to Fusion IT STICKS.
